Seoul monitors growing activity in Pyongyang for possible military parade

Seoul, Feb 6 (EFE).- South Korean Army said Monday it is monitoring “increased activities” in North Korea, which is apparently preparing for a military parade to be held in the next few days to mark the 75th founding anniversary of its armed forces.

Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) spokesperson Lee Sung-jun said in a press conference that increased activities related to these preparations have been observed in the North as the anniversary date, Feb 8, approaches.

“As the date of the event is approaching, we are observing it with a greater interest,” said Lee, who declined to reveal further details regarding the South Korean army’s analysis, according to local Yonhap News Agency.

Besides commercial satellite imagery, experts have highlighted the movement of North Korea’s vehicles, troops and other military equipment in the Sunan and Mirim airfields in Pyongyang over the past few days leading up to the anniversary.

NK News, a website specializing in North Korea, has been reporting the regime’s apparent preparations for a new military parade for weeks.

It is believed that the parade could include displays of missiles and other military equipment developed by Kim Jong-un’s secretive regime.

According to NK News, multiple jets with flares and LED lights have been spotted practicing formations at night in the capital, Pyongyang, along with the installation of large structures in Kim Il-Sung Square, a common setting for North Korean parades.

In 2018, Pyongyang celebrated the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People’s Army (KPA) with a military parade.

The last event with an exhibition of this kind took place on April 25, 2022, marking 90 years since the founding of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army.

The regime considers KPA to have been founded on April 25, 1932, when Kim Il-Sung (founder of the country and grandfather of the current leader) established an army specializing in guerilla warfare to fight the Japanese who were occupying the country then.

Although for some years the date was changed to Feb 8, 1948, which is when it was officially established. EFE
