Israel’s parliament dissolves triggering new elections

Jerusalem, Jun 30 (EFE).- Israel’s parliament voted on Thursday to dissolve itself, triggering new elections in November for the fifth time in nearly four years.

The 92-0 vote ended prime minister Naftali Bennett’s eight-way coalition, which was left without a majority in the 120-member Knesset after a lawmaker quit the alliance.

Foreign minister Yair Lapid will become the country’s caretaker prime minister until a new government is formed.

On Wednesday, Bennett announced that he would not run in upcoming elections, with current interior minister Ayelet Shaked replacing him as the head of the far-right Yamina party.

Bennett’s announcement came during a speech, in which he highlighted some achievements of his government, gave his support to Lapid, and stressed the importance of Israeli parties.

Former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption, has been emerging as the winner in recent opinion polls, while Lapid comes second.EFE
