US gymnast Simone Biles pulls out of individual all-around final

Tokyo, Jul 28 (EFE).- Superstar Simone Biles has pulled out of the individual all-around final at the Tokyo Olympics in order to focus on her mental well-being, USA Gymnastics said on Wednesday.

The four-time Olympic champion pulled out of the all-around team final on Tuesday, but had left her participation in Thursday’s contest open.

“After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition,” her federation wrote on Twitter.

The 24-year-old star “will continue to be evaluated daily to determine whether or not to participate in next week’s individual event finals,

“We wholeheartedly support Simone’s decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many.”

Jade Carey, ninth in individual qualifying, will replace Biles in the all-around final.

Team USA on Tuesday won silver following Biles’ decision to exit proceedings after just one routine in which she scored 13.766 on the vault at the Ariake Gymnastics Center, her team’s lowest.

With Biles out of the picture of the all-around final that brings together the top 24 athletes, Brazilian Rebeca Andrade, US Sunisa Lee and Russian Angelina Melnikova are favorites to win gold.

Biles won four gold medals and a bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics. EFE
