Efe to discuss the future of journalism at the World Media Congress

Madrid, sep 27 (EFE).- Spanish News Agency EFE will attend the World News Media Congress, organized by the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), which will take place in Zaragoza from September 28-30 to analyze and discuss the future of journalism.

Recent events in Europe have put the spotlight on fresh challenges news publishers are facing which have put sustainability, freedom, democracy and prosperity at risk.

Between 700 and 1,500 leaders from more than 80 countries are expected to attend the World News Media Congress including EFE’s president, Gabriela Cañas.

Cañas will broach how to safeguard and promote the sustainability of media outlets as well as discuss strategic action plans to prepare news agencies for the future.

The EFE chief will be joined by the president of PRISA Media, Carlos Núñez, and CEO of Clarín AGEA, Héctor Aranda, in a panel discussion moderated by Concha Iglesias, partner in charge of the Media, Entertainment and Sports Industry at Deloitte.

Another area that will be covered at the Congress is the lessons alliances between news outlets have garnered for the media sector.

“Thanks to cutting-edge technologies, they (media groups) share premium inventory and digital services that protect user data and facilitate registration. On the advertising side, they (media outlets) join forces and provide a secure and transparent environment for advertisers,” organizers of the event said in a statement.

Participants include Ester García, CEO of Havas Media Group, the Havas Group’s network of media agencies, and Carlos Godó, CEO of Grupo Godó, publisher of La Vanguardia and Mundo Deportivo, among others.

The Congress will also tackle how to manage the growing relationship between public relations, communication directors and the media.

The communications director of Banco Santander, Patricia Colino, general director of the Media Association (AMI), Irene Lanzaco, and the general director of communications at ENDESA, Ignacio Jiménez Soler, will address the subject.

Some 100 speakers from leading news organizations have been invited to share their strategies and solutions to make media outlets sustainable.

SPEAKERS FROM THE WASHINGTON POST, REUTERS, AFP, SÜDDEUTSCHE ZEITUNG AND EL PAÍS WILL BE AMONG THE ATTENDEES.

Kat Downs Mulder, general product manager and editorial director at the Washington Post, Alessandra Galloni, editor-in-chief at Reuters, Madhav Chinnappa, director of news development for Google, Marcelo Rech, president of the Brazilian Newspaper Association and Pepa Bueno, director of Spanish El País newspaper, will also be present at the event, among others including Phil Chetwynd, global news director at AFP, Wolfgang Krach, editor-in-chief at Süddeutsche Zeitung and director of subscriber growth at The New York Times.

This year, “we are expecting an exceptional event, with more than 700 media executives and editors attending the World Congress, the World Editors Summit and the Women in News Summit,” Fernando de Yarza, president of WAN-IFRA, said.

For Vincent Peyrègne, director general of the World Association of News Publishers, the future of the media and its sustainable growth, is “fundamental as we meet at a time of heightened social and political division and economic stress.”

“As we face unprecedented challenges — for many the most serious since World War II — solidarity and support are needed to defend press freedom and ensure that independent journalism and media can continue to play their role,” Peyrègne.

WAN-IFRA is the world’s largest trade organization for news publishers and a leading provider of real-time business and strategic intelligence services to news publishers and their technology partners around the globe.

Its mission is to protect the rights of journalists and editors while ensuring that the role of the press in society is understood and respected.

The World Media Congress is the most important annual gathering of media leaders since 1948. EFE
