Little Amal embarks on journey across Europe in support of refugees

Istanbul, Jul 27 (EFE).- Little Amal, a 3.5 meter-tall puppet of a young refugee girl, embarked Tuesday on an epic journey across Turkey and Europe in support of the millions of displaced children and refugees.

Under the slogan “Don’t forget about us,” the not so little puppet will start its 8,000 kilometer voyage from the Syria-Turkey border all the way to the United Kingdom.

The Walk, presented by the Handspring Puppet Company, will bring together artists, cultural institutions and humanitarian groups in a traveling art festival across the European continent.

“It is because the attention of the world is elsewhere right now that it is more important than ever to reignite the conversation about the refugee crisis and to change the narrative around it,” Artistic Director of The Walk, Amir Nizar Zuabi, said.

“The purpose of The Walk is to highlight the potential of the refugee, not just their dire circumstances,” he added.

In every place Little Amal will travel through, local artists and community organizations will welcome her with city festivals and performances of dance, music, theatre and poetry.

“The Walk is an extraordinary artistic response: a cultural odyssey transcending borders, politics and language to tell a new story of shared humanity – and to ensure the world doesn’t forget the millions of displaced children, each with their own story, who are more vulnerable than ever during the global pandemic,” organizers said in a statement.
