India’s daily coronavirus infections lowest in 3 weeks

New Delhi, Sep 22 (efe-epa).- India on Tuesday recorded its lowest number of daily coronavirus cases in three weeks with a little over 75,000 new infections in the last 24 hours, according to federal health ministry data.

The country, second worst-affected by the virus worldwide, also reported 1,053 deaths over the same period.

With 75,083 cases recorded since Monday morning, India’s tally crossed the 5.56 million mark and the death toll from the virus reached 88,935. The country’s fatality rate stands at 1.59 percent.

The country recorded nearly 69,000 cases on Aug. 31 and has since maintained a daily tally of more than 80,000 cases with nearly 98,000 infections, the highest so far. reported on Sep.16

The ministry said India also recorded the highest number of single-day recoveries on Tuesday with more than 100,000 new recoveries registered within the last 24 hours.

It indicated that the number of people who have recovered from Covid-19 has been higher than the newly detected cases for several days now.

“In another landmark achievement, the trend of very high number of single day recoveries has sustained for the past four consecutive days,” the ministry said in a statement.

With this, the total number of recoveries has nearly close to 4.5 million, with the recovery rate touching nearly 81 percent.

“India’s landmark achievement of recording the maximum number of recoveries has positioned it as the top country globally,” the ministry claimed.

The country of 1.3 billion people, the second-most populous in the world, has been recording the highest number of new cases in the world since August.

In September, India recorded an average of 90,000 cases per day until recently, raising fears that it would overtake the United States, the worst hit by the virus, within a few weeks. The US has more than 7 million infections and over 204,000 related fatalities.

The number of cases has been rising amid growing demand and dip in the supply of supplementary oxygen for critically ill patients.

In a bid to maintain an adequate supply of oxygen for hospitals across the country, the government on Monday ordered the waiver of a permit requirement for vehicles carrying oxygen till March 2021 next year.

“The decision has been taken in view of certain issues brought to notice about problems being faced by vehicle operators for the carriage, transportation and delivery of oxygen cylinders or oxygen tanks across the states or within a state,” the federal transport ministry said.

“This will ensure smooth movement of this essential commodity and will further ensure smooth supply of oxygen across the country.” EFE-EPA
