UN reports 3,455 civilian casualties since Ukraine invasion began

Geneva, Apr 4 (EFE).- The Russian invasion of Ukraine has resulted in a total of 3,455 civilian casualties – 1,417 dead and 2,038 wounded – up to midnight on Apr.2, according to the latest report by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

OHCHR said that the actual figures are considerably higher, as information was yet to be corroborated from certain places where heavy fighting has taken place.

Of the 1,417 deaths, there were 293 men, 201 women, 22 girls and 40 boys, as well as 802 adults and 59 children whose sex could not be determined.

Of the 2,038 wounded, there were 241 men, 187 women, 41 girls and 38 boys, as well as 1,439 adults and 92 children whose sex could not be determined.

According to OHCHR accounts, in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, where fighting has intensified in recent days, there have been 1,504 casualties, including 468 dead and 1,036 wounded.

Of these, 1,185 casualties – 401 dead and 784 wounded – have been reported from government-controlled territories and 319 – 67 dead and 252 wounded – have occurred in territory controlled by the self-proclaimed republics.

In other regions of Ukraine – Kiev city and regions of Cherkasy, Chernigov, Kharkiv, Kherson, Kiev, Mykolaiv, Odessa, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro and Zhytomyr – under government control when the reports came in, there were 1,951 casualties, including 949 killed and 1,002 wounded, according to the OHCHR report.

According to the human rights office, most civilian casualties were due to the use of explosive weapons with a wide impact area, including heavy artillery bombardment and multiple rocket launch systems, and air and missile attacks. EFE
