Ronaldo celebrates Manchester United return with a brace

Sports Desk, Sep 11 (EFE).- Cristiano Ronaldo started his second stint with Manchester United in style Saturday, scoring twice to lead the side 4-1 over Newcastle United.

After receiving a rapturous reception on his first appearance in 12 years at Old Trafford in United colors, the 36-year-old Portuguese striker dispelled any doubts about whether he remains capable of the kind of magic that led to a long list titles with the Red Devils, Real Madrid and Juventus.

Ronaldo was engaged from the opening whistle and put the hosts ahead on the edge of half-time with a tap-in in close range when Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman failed to secure the ball after stopping an effort from Mason Greenwood.

Javier Manquillo brought Newcastle level in the 56th minute on a brilliant counter led by Miguel Almiron.

The visitors’ joy lasted only until the 62nd minute, when Ronaldo fired between Woodman’s legs after taking a pass from Luke Shaw.

Bruno Fernandes extended the lead in the 80th minute with an assist from Paul Pogba, who likewise provided a helper for Jesse Lingard’s goal in stoppage time.

United go top of the Premier League with 10 points, one more then defending champions Manchester City. Newcastle, on 1 point after four matches, are 19th. EFE
