Israel launches vaccination rollout for children aged 5-11

Jerusalem, Nov 23 (EFE).- Israel on Tuesday officially launched a campaign to vaccinate children aged between five and 11 years against coronavirus.

The rollout officially got underway to administer the Pfizer vaccine to nearly 1.2 million eligible children.

In parallel with the start of the campaign, the authorities have launched an initiative to raise awareness among parents of these children, with local media reporting that many families are unsure whether they want to inoculate their children.

On different platforms, the health ministry stressed that the vaccine is 91% effective in this age group based on clinical tests and the first figures from the United States.

“The Ministry of Health encourages parents to consult with the pediatrician, make a decision based on facts and data, schedule an appointment, vaccinate and protect children, and prevent the next wave,” the ministry posted on Telegram.

A slight increase in cases prompted Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett on Sunday to say that the country seems to be on the verge of a new wave that mainly affects children.

Thus, he hoped parents would not hesitate to vaccinate their children.

The doses administered to children contain only a third of the amount of the injections for adults.

Over six million people, out of Israel’s 9.3 million inhabitants, have received at least one dose, while 5.7 million have been administered two jabs and over four million got a booster.

Currently, Israel has less than 6,000 active cases, including 128 hospitalized patients, with 682 fresh infections reported on Monday. EFE
