New lava flow causes great destruction on Spain’s La Palma island

Santa Cruz de La Palma, Spain, Oct 9 (EFE).- The new lava flow from the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma is causing “tremendous destruction”, Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan) said Saturday.

Involcan published images of the flow saying it was hindering the movement of scientists in the area as the volcano resumed releasing lava earlier in the day.

The volcano has been erupting since 19 September. It took ten days for the lava to hit the ocean.

The land gained by the lava from the sea, the so-called lava delta, runs the risk of collapsing if it continues its advance to greater depths in the ocean, which would be accompanied by the sudden release of gases, explosions and waves.

For a few days, the eruption of the volcano has been in a stable phase, although scientists predict its activity will continue for a long time.

The seismic activities on the island continue to increase in number and intensity, at a depth greater than 10 kilometers, which makes the possibility of a new eruptive center far from the main cone “extremely rare” for the moment, according to the experts. EFE
