Philippines presidential son elected senior House leader

Manila, July 26 (EFE).- As the Marcos family strengthens its hold on the Philippines Congress, the House of Representatives chose presidential son Ferdinand Alexander Sandro Marcos as senior deputy majority leader on Tuesday.

Sandro Marcos, a 28-year-old first-time House member, will hold a high-ranking post in the chamber.

Sandro Marcos was elected with no opposition. He is President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s son and House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez’s nephew.

He won the House seat as a member of the Ilocos Norte district in the 2022 elections.

The election of the presidential son consolidates the Marcos family’s buildup of power in the executive and legislative branches.

Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, President Marcos’ cousin, was chosen Speaker of the House Monday after receiving more than 95 percent support for his nomination.

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri was also nominated as Senate president for the start of the 19th Congress on Monday.

Additionally, on Monday, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri received his nomination for Senate president at the start of the 19th Congress.

The Senate is the legislative body with the most sway since it is where resolutions of censure against the president and constitutional amendments are advanced.

The political dominance of the Marcos clan continued after the downfall and exile of dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986. It peaked when his son was elected president in May after winning a resounding victory.

Imelda, the widow of the dictator, was a parliamentarian until 2016. EFE
