Russia attacks Kyiv, Odesa with drones as Nato summit begins in Lithuania

Kyiv, Jul 11 (EFE).- Ukraine said Tuesday it shot down more than two dozen Russian kamikaze drones that were launched overnight targeting the capital Kyiv and the southwestern city of Odesa, hours before a Nato summit kicked off in Lithuania.

In a statement, the Ukrainian Air Force announced that it intercepted 26 Shahed kamikaze drones out of 28 that were launched.

Fragments of some of the drones fell onto residential areas in Kyiv, causing damage to 12 homes and a block of apartments.

In Odesa, the local military authorities said 22 drones targeting the Black Sea city’s port were downed.

Two port terminals, one of them dedicated to grain exports, were damaged as a result of falling drone debris.

“Due to falling fragments from the downed drones, a fire broke out at two terminals near the port, including a grain terminal,” the head of the Odesa Oblast Military Administration, Oleg Kiper, said on Telegram on Tuesday.

Kiper added that Ukrainian anti-aircraft defenses foiled “the enemy’s plan to attack the grain terminal.”

Two administrative buildings at the port were damaged in the attack, he added.

The drone strikes came on the morning that a leaders’ summit of Nato members began in Vilnius.

The alliance’s secretary general Jens Stoltenberg said at the start of the summit that Ukraine, which has been pushing to join since Russia invaded last zear, would get “”a clear message, a positive message” on its accession. EFE
