Tokyo 2020 fan zones canceled

Tokyo, Jun 19 (EFE).- Public viewing sites for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics have been canceled in the Japanese capital due to the coronavirus pandemic, Tokyo Metropolitan governor Yuriko Koike announced on Saturday.

Some of the six public places where giant screens were scheduled to be set up for fans to follow the competition will be turned into vaccination centers, Koike said.

On Monday, organizers are expected to decide on whether or not to allow local fans into the stadiums during the Games, after the prime minister said he was in favor of having limited spectators against the advice of medical experts.

The government’s new guidelines limit to 10,000 people the maximum capacity of sports venues, which is expected to be applied to the Olympics.

The health emergency state declared in Tokyo in late April will be lifted by 21 June, a little over a month before the Olympics, but restrictions will be in place mainly affecting businesses such as bars and restaurants. EFE
