Muted Carnival celebrations amid national Covid lockdown

Duesseldorf, Germany, Feb 15 (epa-efe).- Annual carnival celebrations in Germany, which ordinarily would see tens of thousands of people in fancy dress throng city centers for parades, have been cancelled in 2021 because of the nationwide lockdown to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Rose Monday, normally the climax of the week-long celebration, was a muted affair, with just a handful of costumed revelers seen dancing in the streets of Duesseldorf. They were quickly told by masked police officers to disperse.

Despite the ban on crowds, custom-made floats satirizing the year’s events were allowed to drive through the largely deserted streets, on a route that was not made public to avoid any gatherings.
