Portugal’s Jota to miss World Cup with calf injury

London, Oct 18 (EFE).- Portugal forward Diogo Jota will miss the 2022 Qatar World Cup after picking up a muscle injury during Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Manchester City at the weekend.

The 25-year-old said in a social media post that one of “his dreams collapsed” after he picked up a calf injury in the dying minutes of Sunday’s Premier League game.

“I will be one more supporting from the outside, club and country, and fighting to be back as soon as possible,” he added.

Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp told a news conference Tuesday that Jota’s injury was “pretty serious.”

“It’s really not good news about Diogo. Yes, he will miss the World Cup,” the German added on the eve of Liverpool’s upcoming league match against West Ham.

Although he did not give a precise timescale, Klopp said Jota’s recovery was a question of “months.”

Jota was stretchered off the pitch at Anfield in stoppage time after going down off the ball.

The forward had only just returned from a hamstring injury.

Portugal are due to kick off their World Cup campaign on November 24 with a Group H encounter against Ghana. The Iberian team will also tussle it out with South Korea and Uruguay in the group stages. EFE
