X creates yearly $1 fee for new users in New Zealand, Philippines

Manila, Oct 18 (EFE).- Social network X (formerly Twitter) said it would start charging for its services to new users in New Zealand and the Philippines to perform any basic action except reading and following other accounts.

In a statement published Wednesday, the company run by magnate Elon Musk said the measure, called “Not a bot” and in the experimental phase, seeks to “reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity.”

Starting Wednesday, the services included in the rate include publishing, reposting, replying and liking, while those who do not pay will only be able to follow other accounts, read and view photos and videos.

“This will allow us to evaluate a potentially powerful measure to help us combat bots and spam accounts on X, while maintaining access to the platform in exchange for a reduced fee,” X’s message read.

New users in New Zealand and the Philippines will first need to verify their account with their phone number and pay the equivalent of $1.

X said it would share the results of this experimental measure as soon as possible.

Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, who acquired Twitter in 2022 and rebranded it as X, has looked for ways to increase revenue for the platform, including a fee for premium subscribers.

However, Musk also carried out mass layoffs and eliminated anti-disinformation monitoring teams, which has led to a rise in fake news and hate messages online and the subsequent flight of many of its advertisers. EFE
