EU Parliament gives green light to EU Digital Covid Certificate

Strasbourg, France, Jun 9 (EFE).- The European Parliament approved on Wednesday the EU Digital COVID Certificate to facilitate safe free travel movement of citizens in the EU during the coronavirus pandemic.

The certificate will become available in all EU Member States as of July 1, even though some countries including Spain have already started using it.

It is proof that a person has either been vaccinated against Covid-19, received a negative Covid-19 test result, or recovered from the infection.

Tuesday’s vote in parliament, which received 546 votes in favor and only 93 against, is the materialization of a deal that the EP and Council had already agreed on in May.

The EU Council says the certificate will not be a precondition to free movement — a fundamental right in the EU — but an opportunity for EU countries to adjust existing measures without having to impose additional travel restrictions.

People who are not yet vaccinated will still be able to travel to another EU country.

The certificate will be available in digital or paper format and will be in place for 12 months. EFE
