At least 6 killed in suicide attack in Somalia

Mogadishu, May 11 (EFE).- At least six people were killed and 11 others injured in a suicide attack on a checkpoint in the Somali capital Mogadishu, a security agent said on Wednesday.

An unidentified person blew off a bomb in the surroundings of the Aden Adde international airport, Abdullahi Ali Ahmed, one of the security agents who survived the attack, told Efe.

The incident comes four days before the country’s long-awaited presidential elections.

Somalia’s 54-member senate and 275-member lower house are set to pick the head of state during a joint session on May 15.

The presidential election has been repeatedly postponed since 2021 amid political disputes.

Among the 39 candidates is incumbent Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, who is seeking a second term in office.

Somalia has been in a state of upheaval since 1991 when the toppling of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre left the country without an effective government and vulnerable to Islamic militants, warlords and criminal groups. EFE
