David Attenborough named People’s Advocate for crucial COP26 summit

London, May 10 (EFE).- British broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough has been appointed People’s Advocate for the United Nations’ Climate Change Conference (COP26) to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, in November.

Attenborough will address world leaders and the public at COP26, considered the most important meeting in the fight against climate change since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015, and where a consensus on tackling the environmental emergency will be sought.

He will also speak at the G7 leaders’ summit in Cornwall, southwest England, next month.

The famous 95-year-old film-maker said in a video message that “there could not be a more important moment that we should have international agreement.”

“The epidemic has shown us how crucial it is to find agreement among nations if we are to solve such worldwide problems. But the problems that await us within the next five, ten years are even greater,” the added.

“It is crucial that these meetings in Glasgow – COP26 – have success, and that at last the nations will come together to solve the crippling problems that the world faces.”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a statement that “Sir David Attenborough has already inspired millions of people in the UK and around the world with his passion and knowledge to act on climate change and protect the planet for future generations.”

“There is no better person to build momentum for further change as we approach the COP26 climate summit in November.” EFE
