Russia claims to have foiled assassination attempt on Crimea head

Moscow, Jul 3 (EFE).- Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) Monday said it had thwarted an assassination attempt on Sergey Aksyonov, head of the annexed Crimea region, the security agency said in a statement.

“During the operational and investigation activities, a Russian citizen, born in 1988, who was recruited by the SBU (the Ukrainian Security Service) and completed a training course in reconnaissance and subversive activities, including mine-explosive training, was identified and detained,” it said.

According to the FSB, the suspect arrived in Crimea in June and “began preparation for the terrorist attack, which he planned to carry out by blowing up the car of the Head of the (Crimean) Republic.”

It said that the bomber was detained while trying to pick up the explosive device from where he was hiding it.

FSB has opened a criminal investigation against the suspect, who remained in pre-trial detention, for attempted terrorist acts and possession, transfer and sale of explosive devices.

The Crimea head Sergey Aksyonov hailed Russian security service for “preventing the assassination attempt.”

“Our intelligence agencies work clearly and efficiently. I am sure that the specific customers of this crime will be found and punished,” he said on Telegram.

Sergey insisted the only way to “completely eliminate the terrorist threat from Kyiv” was possible through military operations. EFE
