Putin appoints prominent Russian faces as campaigners for 2024 elections

Moscow, Dec 28 (EFE).- President Vladimir Putin has enlisted several renowned Russian personalities, such as filmmaker Nikita Mijalkov and musician Yuri Bashmet, to bolster his campaign in the upcoming presidential elections slated for March 2024.

“The Central Election Commission of Russia has registered representatives of the presidential candidate, Vladimir Putin. The list includes 346 people, who have been issued certificates,” the electoral body said in a short statement on Thursday.

The list also features prominent figures such as singer Larisa Dolina, actor Sergei Bezrukov, and figure skater and the wife of the Kremlin spokesperson Tatiana Navka, among others.

The campaigners largely consist of individuals who have openly endorsed the policies of the Russian government in recent years, particularly Putin’s war campaign in Ukraine.

According to Putin’s campaign officials, the number of electoral campaigners for the Russian leader could reach 600, as the hiring process was still underway.

In the 2018 presidential elections, Putin had appointed over 470 campaigners, about 60% of whom would be retained for the 2024 elections, according to his campaign office.

Pre-election projections suggest that the 71-year-old Putin is likely to secure a victory in next year’s elections with a higher vote count than in 2018, where he garnered over 76% of the votes.

On Dec. 23, the Central Election Commission rejected the candidacy of anti-war journalist Yekaterina Duntsova for the Russian presidency.

Duntsova, an advocate for peace in Ukraine, revealed plans on Wednesday to establish her own party, representing the “tens of millions” of Russians who aspire to “a democratic and peaceful future.” EFE
