Prince Harry in legal fight with UK over right to pay for police protection

London, Jan 16 (EFE).- Prince Harry has launched legal action against the British government for removing his police protection and preventing him from paying for it personally while in the country.

A legal representative of the Duke of Sussex said in a statement that Harry does not feel safe in the United Kingdom, which means he is “unable to return to his home” with his wife Meghan and children, Archie and Lilibet.

In the summer of 2021, the prince’s car was chased by paparazzi photographers after he left a charity event in London.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had 24-hour police protection two years ago when they gave up their royal titles and renounced their duties and public funding.

Harry offered to cover the costs for UK security himself but the Home Office turned the request down.

“The goal for Prince Harry has been simple – to ensure the safety of himself and his family while in the UK so his children can know his home country,” the statement added.

In his claim for a judicial review, Harry argued that his security team in the United States lacks jurisdiction abroad and cannot access UK intelligence information.

“The UK will always be Prince Harry’s home and a country he wants his wife and children to be safe in. With the lack of police protection comes too great a personal risk,” the legal representative continued.

Harry, who relocated to California with his family in 2020, has always been concerned about the risk his family faces in the UK in public statements and directly blamed the paparazzi for the car crash that killed his mother, Princess Diana, back in 1997.EFE
