The Tennessee Department of Transportation has granted a $141 million contract to Nashville-based Bell & Associates Construction for upgrades to the Interstate 55 interchange at West E.H. Crump Boulevard, according to an April 1 press release.

The goal is to reduce headaches and accidents at the interchange, which is just on the Memphis side of the Memphis-Arkansas Bridge, by making it easier for I-55 drivers to stay on the interstate.

For years, they have had to slow down and take an exit, merging with neighborhood traffic, in order to stay on the highway. The intersection was a major choke point last year when the Interstate 40 bridge was closed.

The exact dollar amount is $141,214,798.50 for 1,019 days.

Construction will begin this month and is expected to conclude in the first quarter of 2025, earlier than the previous estimate of October 2026. Bell offered the lowest bid, the press release states.

A multi-lane roundabout intersection will replace the cloverleaf interchange, and repairs to the bridge are also part of the scope of work.

TDOT expects several temporary closures of the bridge. The original plan had been to close the bridge for up to nine months, allowing quicker construction.

It could be closed for up to eight weekends, from Friday evening to Monday morning. There could also be two closures lasting two weeks each, the press release states, “for work that cannot be performed while maintaining traffic through the worksite.”

A spokeswoman for TDOT did not immediately respond to an email asking about the source of the funding.
