Casemiro helps Manchester United set up Liverpool quarterfinal clash

Sports Desk, Feb 29 (EFE).- Brazilian Casemiro struck as Manchester United beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 to progress to the FA Cup quarterfinals for a match against fierce rivals Liverpool.

Liverpool coasted past Southampton 3-0 en route to the last eight, where they were also joined by Chelsea and Wolverhampton on the same night.

Chelsea edged Leeds in a five-goal thriller, while Wolves posted a nervy 1-0 win over Brighton at Molineux.

Casemiro appeared to be the unlikely hero in Nottingham after both sides missed a flurry of chances.

The holding midfielder headed home a Bruno Fernandes free-kick in the 89th minute to save the game from going into extra time.

Meanwhile, Liverpool kept their chase for a quadruple on track, seeing off Southampton easily at Anfield despite being forced to field a youthful side three days after winning the League Cup.

None of the 12 players who missed the League Cup final due to injury recovered, while the Reds also left other regular starters Luis Diaz, Ibrahima Konate, and Alexis Mac Allister on the bench.

Nineteen-year-old Welshman Louie Koumas made it 1-0, making his debut with the first team, before fellow teenager Jayden Danns scored a brace to put the game to rest.

“We were not involved in the timing, to be honest, too much because we had to use them because we don’t have other players,” said Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp about the team’s youngsters.

“I would like to say we waited five years and I saw them first time when they were 13,” he said.

Chelsea had Conor Gallagher to thank for scoring the winner in the 90th minute that gave them a 3-2 win over Leeds at Stamford Bridge.

Leeds took a shock lead when Jaidon Anthony intercepted a ball from Axel Disasi and laid it off to Mateo Joseph, who scored from close range.

Nicholas Jackson pulled the hosts level, striking the ball from an acute angle seven minutes later.

Mykhailo Mudryk raced onto a Raheem Sterling pullback to score his first goal of 2024, putting Chelsea ahead.

Leeds leveled on the hour mark thanks to Joseph’s second goal of the game, which came off a header.

Substitute Gallagher spared Chelsea’s blushes, sweeping the ball past Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier in the 90th minute to set up a contest against Leicester City in the last eight.

Mario Lemina’s first-ever FA Cup goal two minutes into the start proved to be decisive as Wolves beat Brighton in an all-Premier League affair.

Erling Haaland scored five as holders Manchester City coasted to a 6-2 victory over Luton Town earlier on Tuesday. EFE
