TEMPORADA DE GRIPE: TODAVÍA HAY TIEMPO PARA VACUNARSE

 

FLU SEASON: THERE IS STILL TIME TO GET THE FLU SHOT

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Estamos en plena temporada de gripe y el condado de Shelby ya tiene el mayor número de casos de influenza a nivel estatal.

Según las estadísticas, más de 2.800 casos de gripe fueron reportados en la última semana de diciembre. El Departamento de Salud del Condado de Shelby, por su lado, anunció que se registraron casi 12.000 casos de gripe, de pacientes en emergencias, entre el 1 de octubre del 2019 y el 2 de enero del 2020.

Los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés) estiman que han habido al menos 2.900 muertes y 55.000 hospitalizaciones relacionadas con la gripe en todo el país desde finales de septiembre del 2019.

Los médicos aconsejan estar atentos a los síntomas de la gripe que incluyen: fiebre, tos, dolor de cabeza, dolores corporales y escalofríos. También sugieren la vacuna contra la gripe para una mayor protección.

De acuerdo con los expertos en salud, la vacuna es efectiva entre un 40 y 60 por ciento este año, en comparación con el 29 por ciento del año pasado.

Actualmente, el Departamento de Salud del Condado de Shelby está ofreciendo las vacunas contra la gripe sin costo alguno. Las personas que estén interesadas en vacunarse pueden ir a los siguientes centros clínicos:

La vacuna gratuita contra la gripe estará disponible, hasta agotar existencias, en todas estas clínicas del Departamento de Salud del Condado de Shelby de 9:00 a.m. a 3:30 p.m., con la excepción de la clínica en Collierville, la cual está abierta sólo los martes y jueves. No se necesita hacer cita.

 

Es importante recordar que las personas con alto riesgo de complicaciones graves de la gripe son:

¤ Niños pequeños, especialmente aquellos menores de dos años de edad.

¤ Mujeres embarazadas y mujeres que tienen hasta dos semanas de haber dado a luz.

¤ Personas con enfermedades crónicas como asma, diabetes, una enfermedad cardíaca o una enfermedad pulmonar.

¤ Personas mayores de 65 años.

¤ Personas con trastornos renales o hepáticos.

¤ Personas con sistemas inmunes débiles debido a enfermedades o medicamentos, como aquellos con VIH/SIDA o cáncer.

¤ Residentes de hogares de ancianos y otras instalaciones de cuidado a largo plazo.

 

Consejos adicionales para proteger a su familia y a otros de la gripe:

¤ Usar siempre la “etiqueta respiratoria” al toser en el codo o en un pañuelo de papel en lugar de las manos.

¤ Lavarse las manos con frecuencia con agua y jabón o con un desinfectante para manos a base de alcohol.

¤ La limpieza y desinfección de rutina en el hogar y el lugar de trabajo son importantes para reducir los riesgos de gripe.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — The flu season is here and Shelby County already has the highest number of cases of influenza statewide.

According to statistics, more than 2,800 cases of influenza were reported in the last week of December. In the meantime, the Shelby County Health Department recorded almost 12,000 emergency department visits for flu-like illnesses from Oct.1, 2019 through Jan. 2, 2020.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that there have been at least 2,900 deaths and 55,000 flu-related hospitalizations nationwide since late September in 2019.

Doctors advise to be aware of flu symptoms that include: fever, cough, headache, body aches and chills. They also suggest to get the flu vaccine for an better protection.

According to health experts, the vaccine is 40-60 percent effective this year, compared to last year’s 29 percent.

Currently, the Shelby County Health Department is offering free flu shots. People who are interested in getting the flu shot can go to the following locations:

The free flu vaccine will be available, while supplies last, at all of these Shelby County Health Department clinics during the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., with the exception of the Collierville clinic, which is open Tuesday and Thursday only. No appointment is needed.

 

It is important to keep in mind that people at high risk of serious flu complications include:

¤ Young children, especially those under two years of age.

¤ Pregnant women and women up to two weeks postpartum.

¤ People with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart disease or lung disease.

¤ People aged 65 years and older.

¤ People with kidney or liver disorders.

¤ People with weakened immune systems due to disease or medication, such as those with HIV/AIDS or cancer.

¤ Residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.

 

Follow these additional tips to protect your family and others from the flu:

¤ Always use “respiratory etiquette” by coughing into your elbow or a tissue instead of your hands.

¤ Wash hands frequently with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand rub.

¤ Routine cleaning and disinfection in the home and workplace are important to reduce flu risks.
