Italy to administer booster jabs to 3 million immunocompromised people

Rome, Sep 7 (EFE).- Italy will administer a Covid-19 vaccine booster to 3 million people suffering immunodeficiency starting this month, a rollout that will include the elderly and healthcare workers next, commissioner for the Covid-19 emergency Francesco Paolo Figliuolo announced on Tuesday.

“The first administrations of the third dose (…) will initially involve about 3 million people, the so-called immunocompromised,” Figliuolo said.

“After this step, we will continue, always following scientific guidance(…) with the elderly, nursing homes, health personnel, and then we will see,” he added during a visit to a vaccination center near Rome.

Italy is “close to achieving herd immunity,” the commissioner said.

 “Today we have exceeded 80% of first doses administered in the population over 12 years and therefore we are sure that by the end of September we will achieve 80% of inoculated people (with the full course), which is 43.2 million people,” he added.

Italy has administered 79.45 million doses, and 38.89 million people have received the full course of the vaccine, which represents 72.01% of the Italian population over 12 years old. EFE
