Kabul University attack mastermind sentenced to death

Kabul, Jan 2 (efe-epa).- An Afghan special court has sentenced to death the mastermind behind the worst attack on Kabul University in two decades that left 22 people dead and 40 injured.

“In a special Primary Court, Muhamad Adil, the main mastermind and planner of the terrorist attack on Kabul University was sentenced to death by judges,” Ahmad Fahim Qayum, spokesman for the country’s Supreme Court told Efe on Saturday.

The suspect also faced charges of carrying out terrorist activities and kidnaping.

The session was held at a special court on the outside of the northern Parwan province’s Begram detention center, a Supreme Court source told Efe on condition of anonymity.

The Afghan authorities announced on 14 November that Adil had been arrested, two weeks after the attack.

The investigations revealed that the defendant was recruited three years ago by the Taliban faction of Red Haqqani, although the insurgents distanced themselves from the attack, which was claimed by the Islamic State terror organization.

Adil studied Islamic law at an Afghan university and was instructed to carry out an attack that portrays the Afghan government as weak, according to the Afghan authorities.

The country’s first vice-president, Amrullah Saleh welcomed the ruling: “People were impatiently waiting for this news,” he said.
