India braces for new Covid-19 outbreak, logs over 10,000 daily infections

New Delhi, Apr 13 (EFE).- India on Thursday logged more than 10,000 new Covid-19 infections in a fresh coronavirus spike that officials estimate to last a few weeks.

According to the health ministry data, 10,158 people tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours from Wednesday morning.

It is the highest number of daily infections recorded in more than 200 days and marks a 30 percent jump in just 24 hours.

The ministry did not detail the number of deaths over the past day, but the overall fatalities increased by 35 in the last 48 hours to 531,035.

India’s PTI news agency, citing government sources, said the disease was entering the endemic stage in the country of 1.4 billion people.

The authorities expected cases to increase in the next two weeks before beginning to subside.

The authorities have expressed confidence in the effectiveness of the vaccines against the highly contagious sub-variant of omicron.

Official data indicates that more than 2.2 billion vaccine doses have been administered in the country, and a large part of the population has received at least one immunization dose.

The Serum Institute of India, one of the largest vaccine makers in the world, has said they would resume immunization production in the wake of the spike.

Health facilities in the country held mock drills for a possible new Covid-19 wave earlier this week.

Private and government hospitals tested their health systems by simulating the arrival of coronavirus patients in ambulances and other possible scenarios the country witnessed during earlier Covid-19.

The number of daily infections is far fewer than those registered during the second Covid-19 wave in 2021, logging more than 400,000 infections and 4,000 deaths on a daily basis for several days.

India was one of the worst-affected countries during the pandemic, accounting for more than 44 million cases since the crisis began.

The virus has claimed more than 530,000 deaths, even as the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that the toll in the country of 1.4 billion people could be 4.7 million. EFE
