Police criticize ‘unacceptable violence’ at Berlin May Day protests

Berlin, May 2 (EFE).- German police on Sunday denounced the “unacceptable violence” at “riots” in Berlin the previous night following protests held to mark May Day.

Following mostly peaceful International Workers’ Day marches attended by some 10,000 people which saw just a handful of arrests, small groups of demonstrators turned violent after nightfall on Saturday.

They burned containers and threw bottles and stones at police officers, who responded with tear gas.

Berlin police said 50 of its officers sustained injuries. An unknown number of arrests were made.

May Day in Germany is traditionally marked by largely left-wing protests, especially in the capital, where they often turn violent.

Both left and right-wingers were expected to descend on the German capital to protest restrictions in place to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

Police had braced themselves for large crowds with a deployment of 5,000 officers among other security measures. EFE
