Chelsea allowed to sell tickets for Champions League match versus Real Madrid

London, Mar 23 (EFE).- The British government will allow Premier League soccer club Chelsea to sell tickets for its away games and for certain home games, including the first leg of its Champions League quarterfinal match against Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge.

Wednesday’s decision to ease sanctions that were placed on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, a Russian-born billionaire, as part of the United Kingdom’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine avoids what would have been a behind-closed-doors contest.

The changes to the special operating license that had allowed Chelsea to continue day-to-day operations permit the London club to sell tickets for its home Champions League match against Real Madrid on April 6, its FA Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium on the weekend of April 16 and fixtures involving its women’s team, as long as the proceeds from the sales do not go to the club.

In the case of the Champions League ticket sales, the money will go to UEFA.

Abramovich was included on the UK’s sanctions list due to his alleged links to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Among the terms of the sanctioning license, Chelsea had not been allowed until Wednesday to sell any tickets or merchandise. EFE
