50 people treated after ‘technical problem’ on LATAM flight to Auckland

Sydney, Australia, Mar 11 (EFE).- About 50 people were treated by medics after a “technical problem” caused a “strong movement” during a LATAM Airlines flight from Sydney to Auckland on Monday.

The injured, one in serious condition, were evaluated by emergency services after the aircraft landed in the New Zealand city of Auckland as scheduled at around 4.30 pm (04:30 GMT).

“LATAM Airlines Group reports that flight LA800, operating the Sydney-Auckland route today, had a technical problem during the flight which caused a strong movement,” LATAM noted in a brief statement sent to EFE.

“As a result of the incident, some passengers and cabin crew were affected.”

Although the airline did not provide details of the technical issue, a passenger reported to public broadcaster Radio New Zealand that there was a “mid-air drop” and “people flew through the cabin.”

Another passenger told the New Zealand Herald that she experienced a “quick little drop” and the “whole plane just froze.”

New Zealand’s St. John ambulance service told EFE that its staff were notified of the incident at around 4pm.

Of the 50 people assessed and treated, one is in “serious” condition and the rest in “moderate” to “minor” condition.

Of the total, 13 were taken to an Auckland hospital.

Flight L800, between Sydney and Santiago, Chile, with a stopover in Auckland, is very popular route among the tens of thousands of Latin American immigrants traveling to and from their countries of origin. EFE
