Thousands enjoy the return of the carnival to Panama after a 2-year gap

Panama City, Feb 21 (EFE).- Thousands thronged the promenade of the Panamanian capital and of other cities on Tuesday to celebrate the closing of the carnival, held after a two-year gap due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In addition to the typical queens and floats of the carnival, several stages were set up for artists and DJs to perform while water trucks sprayed water at the enthusiastic crowd, dancing and screaming under the beating sun.

People queued up on Tuesday at Panama City’s promenade, known as Cinta Costera, to enter the park area where the celebrations were held after being screened by the authorities for prohibited objects, such as weapons or glass bottles.

Official spokespersons said that preparations were made to receive up to 20,000 people on Sunday on the promenade, where the capital’s carnival closes with a music show.

Around 11,000 people attended the event on Monday, according to the authorities.

Panamanian authorities had opened vaccination for all aged 12 and above with the bivalent vaccine, which boosts protection against the omicron variant of the coronavirus, before the carnival.

The health ministry also urged people to avoid excessive consumption of alcohol and protect themselves against the possible spread of sexually transmitted diseases. EFE
