1 Teen Shot In Drive-By After Leaving School, Suspect Still At Large, Police Say

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) — Memphis Police Department is searching for a suspect they say shot a teenager who had just gotten out of school for the day.
According to Deputy Chief Don Crowe, the teenager was driving a gold vehicle with two other passengers when shots were fired by an unknown suspect on Union Avenue near Kimbrough.
Police say the suspect was driving a black vehicle and one witness reported that the suspect was wearing a ski mask.
The victim, a Memphis Shelby County Schools student was hit by gunfire in a targeted drive-by shooting leaving school Thursday.
Heartbroken friends, family and police swarmed the scene at Union Avenue and Kimbrough Towers.
“I heard his mom crying and that just broke my heart,” said Patti Joyner Cutberth, who lives near the scene.
Action News 5′s High 5 camera captured the moments the ambulance arrived on scene to rush the teen to the hospital.
Police are calling the crime a drive-by shooting and say the suspects pulled up next to the victim and opened fire.
The teen was driving a gold sedan and was hit.
Police say no one else in the car was hurt, and bystanders stepped in to help.
“The employees from Kimbrough Towers came out immediately and helped the victims, helped the officers with securing the crime scene,” said Memphis Police Assistant Chief Don Crowe.
The investigation causing Grace St. Luke’s Episcopal School to go on a precautionary lockdown.
Neighbors in Central Gardens, along with bystanders, deeply impacted by the crime that shattered the peace in their community.
“Hearing a mother cry like that, it’s very sad and it breaks your heart for sure,” said Joyner Cutberth. “I took her water, but that’s all that I could do.”
Memphis Police say MSCS security was on scene assisting with this investigation.
Last year, 22 MSCS students were killed by an act of violence in Memphis.

“Escuché a su madre llorar y eso me rompió el corazón”, dijo Patti Joyner Cutberth, que vive cerca del lugar.
La cámara del noticiario capturó los momentos en que la ambulancia llegó al lugar para llevar al adolescente al hospital.
La policía califica el crimen como un tiroteo desde un vehículo y dice que los sospechosos se detuvieron junto a la víctima y abrieron fuego.

La policía dice que nadie más en el auto resultó herido y los transeúntes intervinieron para ayudar.
