Tokyo, Apr 29 (EFE).- The number of daily Covid-19 infections in Tokyo on Thursday crossed 1,000 for the first time since the end of January, while the Japanese capital and other regions of the country remain under a health emergency due to a surge in cases.
The Tokyo metropolitan area recorded 1,027 new cases, showing a continued increase in infections in the capital as a part of the fourth wave across the country.
In Osaka prefecture, the hardest hit by the current wave of infections, there were 1,117 new cases reported on Thursday and a record 44 daily deaths.
A total 5,793 fresh infections were recorded across the country in the last 24 hours, the highest in three months.
The spike in cases in Japan comes less than three months before the Tokyo Olympics, scheduled to commence on July 23.
The current situation has led the government to declare a state of emergency in Tokyo, Osaka and two other prefectures until May 11.
The authorities have recommended people in the affected regions to avoid all non-essential movement, and called for the closure of shopping centers, theme parks, cinemas, karaokes and bars and restaurants that serve alcohol.
It has also imposed a ban on public attendance at sporting events.
Japan has recorded a total 583,125 cases and 10,126 deaths since the start of the pandemic. EFE
