Tops Bar-B-Q Gets New Ownership, Including Restaurateur And Former First TN CEO

MEMPHIS, TN (The Memphis Business Journal) — One of Memphis’ iconic barbecue chains now has new owners — including the founder of Soul Fish Cafe and the retired CEO of First Tennessee.

An investor group led by Darrell Horn, Matt Salisbury, and Tiger Bryant bought Tops Bar-B-Q. Bryant is the founder of Soul Fish and Young Avenue Deli.

“Tops Bar-B-Q is a special institution in Memphis, and barbecue is big business here,” Bryant said. “Tops offers not just outstanding food; it is also a true gathering place, where people from all walks of life — of all ages — come to enjoy.”

According to a release about the acquisition, the new owners’ top priorities are “maintaining the warm customer experience, popular menu, and friendly staff.”

The impetus behind the sale — at least for Horn, a diehard fan of Tops since childhood — was to nurture the business and allow it to continue. Horn, the founder of Green Square Wealth Management and Houston’s Center Coast Capital, has 30 years of experience in asset and wealth management. His father, Ralph, who is also an investor in Tops, is the former CEO of First Tennessee.

“Tops is very personal to a lot of people around Memphis, and it’s important to us to keep that tradition alive for many years to come,” Darrell Horn said. “Years ago, my grandfather used to drive from Mississippi specifically to eat at Tops Bar-B-Q.”

Tops CEO Monty Montague was part of the ownership search and will continue his current role with the restaurant. Terry Trim, who has been director of operations at the Kooky Canuck since 2007, is the new president.

“One of our goals was to get new ownership that would be a good fit for our company, and we got a good fit,” Montague said. “We want to continue with the same culture and the same delicious barbecue and do it the way we’ve been doing it for years — the old fashioned way. That’s the successful way.”

Tops has 15 locations throughout Memphis and was founded in 1952. According to Memphis Business Journal research, the company employs 150 full-time employees.
