Tory Lanez given 10 years in prison for shooting Megan Thee Stallion

Los Angeles, United States, Aug 8 (EFE).- A Los Angeles Superior Court judge sentenced rapper Tory Lanez to 10 years in prison Tuesday for shooting and wounding fellow hip-hop artist Megan Thee Stallion in the foot after a party held at the home of model Kylie Jenner in 2020 in Hollywood.

The 31-year-old Canadian rapper was sentenced after being found guilty in December of three crimes: assault with a semiautomatic firearm; having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

“If I could turn back the series of events that night and change them,” I would, Lanez said. “The victim was my friend. The victim is someone I still care for to this day,” the Canadian rapper added before the sentence, according to American media reports.

His defense team requested that a probation or a minimum prison sentence be considered, but Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford dismissed the petition.

“Sometimes good people do bad things,” Herriford said. “Actions have consequences, and there are no winners in this case.”

Megan Thee Stallion, 28, who in the July 2020 incident sustained bullet wounds to her feet and had to undergo surgery, said she has “not experienced a single day of peace” since, adding that “slowly but surely, I’m healing and coming back, but I will never be the same.”

Lawyers for Lanez, in prison since his conviction, sought a retrial, claiming Megan’s testimony about her defendant asking her not to go to the police because he was already on probation was false.

They had also said DNA evidence used by prosecutors to identify Lanez as the shooter was weak.

The rapper’s career began in 2009 and, after this event, released albums such as “Alone At Prom” or “Playboy,” both in 2021, increasing his listener base. He currently has more than 23.5 million monthly streams on the streaming platform Spotify.

Megan Thee Stallion won the Grammy award for best new artist in 2021 and her singles “Savage” with Beyonce, and the collaboration “WAP” with Cardi B, reached No.1 on the United States charts. EFE
