Toyota to adopt Tesla EV charging standards for North America models

Tokyo, Oct 20 (EFE).- Automotive company Toyota announced Friday it would adopt the electric vehicle charging standards of American firm Tesla for Toyota and Lexus cars sold in North America starting in 2025.
The adoption of the so-called North American Charging Standard, developed by Tesla, will give the Japanese company’s vehicles access to more than 12,000 charging stations in North America, the company said in a statement.
Toyota will incorporate the standard charging ports in certain battery electric vehicle models from 2025, including the new SUV model it plans to assemble at its Georgetown plant in Kentucky, United States.
Owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles with Combined Charging System and those who lease these models will have access to an adapter to enable the new charging method.
Toyota vehicles currently have access to more than 84,000 charging ports in North America and this new partnership will allow users of its vehicles to expand that network and have “greater confidence to travel to even more destinations,” the statement said.
Toyota joins other Japanese companies that have already agreed to adopt the standard, including Nissan and Honda. EFE
