China, Russia conduct joint air patrol over East China Sea, Sea of Japan

Beijing, Jun 6 (EFE).- Russian and Chinese military aircraft carried out a joint patrol mission over the East China Sea and Sea of Japan on Tuesday, China’s defense ministry announced.

The sixth joint aerial strategic patrol is part of an annual cooperation agreement between Moscow and Beijing, the ministry said on its official Weibo account..

In March, Russia and China agreed to strengthen their military cooperation in order to increase mutual trust between their armed forces.

“China and Russia will regularly organize joint maritime and air patrols, exercises and training, strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the two militaries, including those under existing bilateral mechanisms, and further deepen military mutual trust,” the two countries said in a joint statement after a meeting in the Kremlin between Russian and Chinese presidents, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.

Since the outbreak of the Ukraine war, China has maintained an ambiguous position during which it has urged that the “sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all countries must be effectively upheld.”

It has also said that the “legitimate security interests and concerns of all countries must be taken seriously and addressed properly,” in reference to Russia.

In February 2022, shortly before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Putin and Xi proclaimed “unlimited friendship” between their nations in Beijing. EFE
