Famous Italian actress Monica Vitti dies aged 90

Rome, Feb 2 (EFE).- Monica Vitti, the Italian actress best known for her roles in movies by directors Mario Monicelli and Michelangelo Antonioni, died aged 90 in Rome on Wednesday.

Italian writer and politician Walter Veltroni announced Vitti’s death, on behalf of Robert Russo, her partner of 40 years.

Vitti was Antonioni’s muse, starring in many of the director’s movies such as the Eclipse, the Adventure, and Red Desert.

“Goodbye to Monica Vitti, the queen of Italian cinema. Today is a really sad day, a great artist and a great Italian died,” Italian minister of culture Dario Franceschini wrote on Twitter.

Vitti enjoyed an illustrious career, receiving all Italian major film prizes, a Golden Lion for Career at the Venice Film Festival, a Silver Bear at Berlin International Film Festival, and a Silver Shell at San Sebastian Film Festival.

Vitti made her debut in 1955 with a small role in the movie Adriana Lecouvreu by Guido Salvini. Five years later, she started her artistic relationship with Antonioni.EFE
