Mexico’s iconic singer Vicente Fernández dies at 81

Mexico City, Dec 12 (EFE).- Renowned Mexican singer Vicente Fernández has died aged 81 after several weeks in hospital following a fall at his home, his family announced Sunday.

“Rest in peace Mr. Vicente Fernández,” his family wrote on social media. “We regret to inform you of his death on Sunday, December 12 at 6:15 am.”

Fernández was first admitted to hospital in August to undergo treatment for spinal cord injuries.

Born in Guadalajara, Fernández started out as a busker before a meteoric rise brought him to the level of cultural icon in Mexico.

The singer won three Grammies, eight Latin Grammies and was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

He sold over 65 million albums in the space of 45 years. EFE
