EU urges China to use its ‘influence’ on Russia to stop Ukraine war

Brussels, Sep 22 (EFE).- High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, on Thursday urged Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to use his country’s influence on Russia to put an end to the war in Ukraine.

In a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Borrell conveyed to Wang, “Europe’s expectations that China uses its influence on Russia to end the war, which is causing a triple crisis around the world: food and energy shortages, and financial instability.”

Borrell also mentioned the “precarious situation” concerning the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, where a nuclear accident could occur “at any moment,” said a statement by the European External Action Service.

In this regard, he stressed on the need to prioritize discussions on a way to avoid a nuclear crisis, according to the statement by the EU’s diplomatic service.

In an urgent meeting overnight in New York, the foreign ministers of the EU agreed to prepare new sanctions on Russia that are expected to be finalized as soon as possible, according to the body’s foreign policy head.

Borrell said this new package of sanctions, which come in response to Russian threats and its decision to mobilize 300,000 reserve troops, will affect different sectors of the Russian economy, including technology, and will include new individuals.

Besides discussing the war between Russia and Ukraine and its destabilizing global effects, Borrell and Wang addressed human rights issues, including a possible EU-China Human Rights Dialogue, concluded the statement. EFE
