Trump says he’s target of Jan. 6 probe, expects to be arrested

New York/Washington, Jul 18 (EFE).- Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday he is a target of the federal investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, siege of the US Capitol and expects to be arrested as part of that probe.
In a post on his Truth Social microblogging platform, Trump said Special Counsel Jack Smith has sent him a letter stating he has four days to report to the grand jury tasked with deciding whether to indict him in the invasion of the Capitol building by his supporters.
In shocking scenes captured on live television, a mob of hundreds of supporters of then-President Trump breached the Capitol building while a joint session of the US Congress was being held to certify then-President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory.
According to the ex-president and current front-runner to be the Republican Party’s presidential nominee in 2024, the so-called target letter he received from the special counsel “almost always means an Arrest and Indictment.”
Trump accused Smith of ultimately acting at the behest of Biden, his “number one political opponent.”
The former head of state, who said he received the target letter on Sunday night while he was with his family, reiterated his oft-stated claims that he is the victim of a “witch hunt” by the Biden administration.
He said he is being targeted solely because he is the clear favorite among the GOP’s field of contenders for the nomination.
In his post, Trump said he is set to be indicted for a third time.
He was alluding to previous indictments for the alleged falsification of business records pertaining to a hush money payment to an adult film star and for the purported “willful retention” of highly classified national security documents.
The 77-year-old Trump also wrote that it is probable that he will face a fourth indictment for allegedly violating Georgia law in his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in that state.
“This witch hunt is all about election interference and a complete and total political weaponization of law enforcement! It is a very sad and dark period for our Nation!” the ex-president said. EFE
