China detects traces of coronavirus on imported chicken wings from Brazil

Beijing, Aug 13 (efe-epa).- Traces of novel coronavirus were detected on samples of a batch of frozen chicken wings in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, southern China, local press reported Thursday, adding that the product was imported from Brazil.

The Chinese Center for Disease Prevention and Control confirmed they found the virus on the surface of a sample product, and the nucleic acid tests were positive, according to Chinese pro-government tabloid Global Times.

All related personnel who may have touched the product have also undergone tests, which so far have come back negative.

In addition, all batches of the contaminated product that had already been sold were traced and confiscated by the authorities, the newspaper added.

The disease control center recommended that consumers be cautious when buying imported meat and seafood, and take “precautions to reduce the risks of infection.”

On Wednesday, traces of coronavirus were found in the packaging of shrimp imported from Ecuador in the Chinese city of Wuhu, in the eastern province of Anhui. On the previous day, the remains of coronavirus molecules were detected on the wrapper of imported frozen seafood in a coastal city in East China’s Shandong province.

On Jul. 10, China suspended imports of frozen white shrimp from three Ecuadorian companies after finding traces of the virus in their packaging, the General Administration of Customs said.

The department said in a statement that the nucleic acid tests carried out on the packages of Industrial Pesquera Santa Priscila, Empacreci and Edpacif came back positive and that there was a risk that they would transmit the virus.

Chinese state television CCTV reported Tuesday that the restaurant in Wuhu had stocked the contaminated packaging in a refrigerator since it was purchased and that all of the stores across the city with the product in question had been sealed off. EFE-EPA
