Ex-Iranian president’s daughter gets 5 years in prison

Tehran, Jan 10 (EFE).- Iranian activist Faezeh Hashemí, the daughter of ex-President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, has been sentenced to five years in prison, her lawyer said on Tuesday.

The lawyer, Neda Shams, said the sentencing by a lower court was not final and that they would appeal against the decision.

Shams did not elaborate on what led to her conviction or the charges against her.

She was accused in July 2022 of “propaganda against the Islamic Republic” for her comments about the Revolutionary Guard.

Faezeh Hashemí, 60. was arrested in September for “inciting rioters” during anti-government protests sparked by the alleged death in custody of Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, 22, in Tehran on September 16.

Amini was detained by the morality police on September 13 for allegedly wearing her hijab improperly.

Faezeh Hashemí thus joins several human rights defenders, journalists, and public figures arrested by the regime for their participation in, or supporting, protests calling for the end of the Islamic Republic.

At least 16 people have been sentenced to death and four executed for their participation in the protests.

The unrest has evolved into demands calling for the end of the Islamic republic founded by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979.

Nearly 500 people have reportedly died in the months-long protests.

The Iranian judiciary has accused at least 2,000 people of various crimes during the demonstrations.

The daughter of Hashemi Rafsanjani, one of the founders of the Islamic Republic and the fourth president from 1989 to 1997, has a long history of activism for freedom in Iran.

Faezeh Hashemí has faced prosecution and jail terms on several occasions.

She spent six months in prison between September 2012 and March 2013 for propaganda against the Islamic regime after she was convicted of attending protests in 2009 against the re-election of conservative President Mahmud Ahmadinejad. EFE
