Trump widens lead over challengers among Republican voters

Washington, Sep 5 (EFE).- Former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) has widened his lead over the other contenders for the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election and exceeds Florida Governor Ron DeSantis by more than 30 points, according to a CNN poll published Tuesday.

Some 52% of Republican voters say they would back Trump for the conservative nomination, compared to 18% who say they would support DeSantis. The last time that CNN had conducted a poll, between June 13 and 17, the two polled 47% and 26%, respectively.

Sixty-five percent of conservative voters say they are convinced of their decision and rule out changing their minds as the election approaches.

Seven out of ten Republicans see Trump as the best qualified to manage the economy, well ahead of DeSantis (9%), his former vice president Mike Pence (4%), or former US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley (3%). Respondents also believe that he is the one who can best deal with immigration (65%).

Trump also remains in the lead as the best-regarded candidate to address the situation in Ukraine (63%), crime and security (54%) and education (42%), as well as abortion (44%) or climate and energy policies (49%).

The most significant concerns among the electorate if Trump gets elected as candidate for 2024 are that the opposition will attack him or refuse to work with him (8 %), his lack of tact (8 %) and his bad public image (7 %).

Only 6% say they are worried about the various accusations against him.

The former president is accused in four criminal cases, two for electoral interference in Washington and Georgia, another in Florida for taking classified papers from the White House when he left office, and the fourth in New York for irregular payments to the porn actress Stormy Daniels to hush about an “affair” during the 2016 campaign.
