Two Israelis killed in suspected Palestinian attack in West Bank
Jerusalem, Aug 19 (EFE).- Two Israeli civilians were killed Saturday in an alleged Palestinian shooting attack in the West Bank town of Huwara, a spokesman for the Israeli army said.
The gunmen fled the scene and were being pursued, the army added.
In a statement, the military said: “an alleged shooting attack was carried out against several Israeli civilians in the town of Huwara. Two civilians were killed as a result of the shooting.”
“IDF soldiers are in pursuit of the suspects and have set up roadblocks in the area,” the statement added.
The Israeli ambulance emergency service Magen David Adom (MDA) said the victims were a 60-year-old man and a 29-year-old man, who were killed by gunfire at a car wash.
Israel officials have not clarified whether the deceased were settlers or Israelis who were passing through Palestinian territory.
The attack in Huwara comes on the same day that a 19-year-old Palestinian man died from gunshot wounds sustained on Wednesday during clashes triggered by an Israeli military raid in the West Bank city of Nablus, according to the official Palestinian news agency, Wafa.
These episodes come amid a prolonged spiral of violence in the area, which is experiencing its bloodiest year since the Second Intifada (2000-2005).
The violence has been concentrated mainly in the northern West Bank, particularly in the cities of Jenin and Nablus, although Huwara has also become a major flashpoint this year. EFE
