Two Israelis killed in West Bank shooting

Jerusalem, Feb 26 (EFE).- Two Israelis were shot dead on Sunday in what was the latest in a months-long wave of violence between Israelis and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, Israeli medical services reported.

A gunman opened fire on an Israeli vehicle at an intersection of a road in a town near the flashpoint northern West Bank city of Nablus, the Israeli army said in a statement.

The victims, two men in their 20s, died from their wounds shortly after they were transferred to a hospital following the attack, a spokesman for Israel’s Magen David Adom medical service told Efe.

Israeli forces have launched a manhunt for the perpetrator who fled the area after the attack.

According to Haaretz newspaper, the attacker was wearing a t-shirt with an insignia of the Lions’ Den, a newly formed Palestinian armed group that emerged in Nablus last year.

Sunday’s attack comes days after 11 Palestinians were killed and more than 100 others were wounded during an Israeli military raid in Nablus in one of the deadliest incidents for Palestinians in years.

So far this year, at least 64 dead so far this year: 59 Palestinians – an average of more than one a day – and 13 people on the Israeli side.

Many of the deaths in recent weeks were during clashes triggered by Israeli military operations in the West Bank, as well as deadly attacks launched by Palestinians against Israelis. EFE
