Putin pardons 52 female prisoners on Women’s Day

Moscow, Mar 8 (EFE).- Russian President Vladimir Putin pardoned 52 female prisoners on the International Women’s Day, the state media reported on Friday.

Among those released are women with children, pregnant women, and women whose relatives are fighting for Russia in the Ukraine war, TASS news agency said.

The decision to pardon “was guided by humanitarian considerations,” the agency said, quoting the president’s office.

The Russian constitution allows the president to pardon convicts under Article 89.

In a video address, Putin said respect for women and motherhood is cherished in Russia as an “unconditional value.”

“Dear women, you certainly have the power to improve this world (…) but above all, thanks to the greatest gift that nature has endowed you with – the bearing of children,” Putin said.

He also thanked the women in the Russian army who are fighting the Ukraine war and those women whose families are separated due to the combat.

“I would like to specifically address the women who are serving in the special military operation now, carrying out combat missions, as well as to others who are now separated from their family members, waiting for our heroes to come home.”

A woman’s heart is an “irresistible force providing an example of perseverance and confidence that good and truth are on our side,” Putin said. EFE
