Russian media regulator blocks opposition leader Navalny’s website
Moscow, Jul 26 (EFE).- Russia’s communications regulator Roskomnadzor has blocked Alexei Navalny’s website, the team of the jailed opposition leader reported on Monday.
Access to the website was banned because it “contained information of which dissemination is prohibited in Russia,” according to Navalny’s team.
Roskomnadzor said the move was carried out following a request from the office of the Russian prosecutor-general.
In addition to the main website, all pages created by Navalny’s supporters demanding his release were also banned.
The number of websites blocked over links to the Russian dissident amounted to 47, his team confirmed on Telegram.
In June, Russia outlawed several organizations associated with the Kremlin critic, including his political movement and declared them “extremist” and prevented members and followers from holding government jobs.
Navalny’s health has deteriorated while serving a sentence of 3.5 years in prison for fraud and money laundering offenses, which his team claim are politically motivated, although he will serve only 2.5 years as he spent 10 months under house arrest.
The imprisonment of the opposition leader, who almost died after he was poisoned during a flight to Serbia in August, sparked massive protests across the country in late January, during which thousands of people were detained.
