UK celebrates coronation with street parties, ‘Big Lunch’
London, May 7 (EFE).- The United Kingdom on Sunday was celebrating the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camila with thousands of street parties and lunches across the country, as well as a concert at Windsor Castle in the evening.
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, were expected to attend a luncheon in Cranleigh town in southern England, while Charles III’s sister, Princess Anne and her husband Timothy Laurence will join the events in Swindon in the southwest.
The festivities, known as the Big Lunch, will be “a nationwide act of celebration and friendship,” according to a Buckingham Palace spokesperson.
Prime minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murthy are also set to host a Downing Street luncheon, to which various volunteers and Ukrainian refugees on the UK are invited.
Later, a coronation concert featuring Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, Paloma Faith, Take That and Olly Murs, among others, will be held at Windsor Castle to celebrate the new monarchs, with 20,000 people expected to attend.
Charles III became king of Britain after his mother, Elizabeth II, died on September 8 last year, while the official coronation ceremony took place in England on Saturday.EFE
